And not for the faint heartedJoe Thorne forty years old returns back to the mining village of Arnhill in Nottingham where he grew up a gambler heavy drinker and running away from his debts he is back to take a job as a teacher Unlikeable characters Lacking in plot structure Was taken in by the hype I do not recommend I didn t realize until I purchased this book was that I had already read the book I was actually getting the UK versionoh wellso instead of returning the book I donated it to a book drop off sponsored by my local public libraryget a book drop off a bookso it was actually a win win situtation I njoyed this book almost as much as the Chalk Man It was uick paced It kept me on the Dark Awakening edge of my seatspecially the part of how the accident happened and AnnieI will definitely be reading from this author I really loved this book so much I read it 2 times I could not put it down I am waiting for the next book by this author so I can continue reading books What a ripoff Enjoyed The Hiding Place so just had Annie Thorne delivered It s the SAME book just different titles WHY Thought it was a preuel to The Hiding Place There s an idea write about what happened to Annie while she was missing That could be all kinds of creepy Good book Be cautious This book and The Hiding Place are the same book byCJTudorJust different Publishers I was really disappointed LIVED THIS BOOKBE WARNED ITS THE EXACT SANE AS THE HIDING PLACE BY HERso disappointed thought it was a new book by this author Exact same story as the hiding place with changed title I read this in a heartbeat My God Tudor s writing is just pure Hawks Way (Hawks Way entertainment Witty dark and funny all at the same time It s amazing how she s able write a male character so well Joe s personality his ideals sense of humor and hilarious remarks are very particular and it seemed like his narrative could have only been written by the protagonist himselfThe mystery got my attention immediately andven though we already new what was happening fairly Family Men early in the book the writing and a few surprises had me happily gripped up until thendI wasn t Creative Participation expecting a supernatural story AT ALL but I wasnjoying the book so much I didn t Sabina Spielrein even care Bring me that horror story that s fineI loved The Chalk Man I adored this one and I m so ready for Tudor s next boo. I Enjoyed this book it was well written and had good suspense however the plot was far too similar to Pet Semetary by Stephen King so there wasn t much originality in my opinion I was uite disappointed because the summary really intrigued me Would not recommend For me this book started really well if a little gruesome however by the nd of the book I was uite honestly glad to finish it It became far fetched I thought and unbelievable an The Taking Of Annie Thorne published in the US under the title The Hiding Place is CJ Tudor s second novel Her horror tinged psychological thriller The Chalk Man was one of my favourite reads of 2018 and was widely praised Personnel Management in Government even carrying anndorsement from Stephen King who saw in it Out of This World echoes of his own workThe Taking Of Annie Thorne is really horror than thriller Joe Thorne a teacher with a shady past returns to the Nottinghamshire mining village in which he grew up to take a job at his former secondary school He s short of money for reasons later revealed and decides to rent a cottage that nobodylse will touch primarily because it s the site of a recent horrifically gruesome murder suicide carried out by the very teacher whose old job he s filling Arnhill like so many villages all but destroyed by pit closures under the Thatcher government is a miserable place with a general air of insularity and neglect and when Joe was growing up there also the scene of an appalling family tragedy involving the disappearance of his little sister an unsolved mystery which tore the Thorne family apart Which raises the obvious uestion if Arnhill holds nothing but bad memories why has Joe decided to to go back there What unfolds is a dark horror story with several twists but in contrast to The Chalk Man The Taking Of Annie Thorne feels like a fairly formulaic tale If you saw scenes and characters inspired by Stephen King s work in The Chalk Man you ll see a major plot The Time It Never Rained element in The Taking Of Annie Thorne which is all but identical to thentire premise of one of King s best known novels I won t say which one because if you ve read it this would be a serious spoiler but I will say that what felt like homage in The Chalk Man feels as if it s dging into fanfiction in The Taking Of Annie Thorne There were so many other things that Tudor could have had happen to Anni. E during her disappearance than the xplanation that s given and the book would have been Childrens Phantasies effective tooA lot of the dialogue is contrived with too much self conscious wisecracking and clumsilyxecuted sarcasm that s never actually particularly witty I also just couldn t ngage with the crime related subplot of this book in which Joe is ntangled with a sinister gangland figure to whom he owes a substantial amount of money I don t think it s particularly well The Soviet Union executed and it jars with the rest of the bookWhile I didn t find Joe Thorne remotely likeable I didn t need to in order to care about what happened to him He s a selectively unreliable narrator of course and his choices are consistently poor both in childhood and as an adult but I found him interesting in particularly his relationship with his little sister is somewhat ambiguous in its intensity The horrorlements of the novel are while derivative than I d have liked also very Gods and Heroes effective and the multiple twists towards thend of the book were not something I saw comingThe Chalk Man is a much accomplished and subtle work so much so that it makes me wonder if The Taking of Annie Thorne was actually written first overall I was disappointed All that said I ll certainly look out for CJ Tudor s third novel and I m sure she ll make a return to form Having thoroughly Science, Technology and Culture enjoyed C J Tudor s Chalk Men I preordered her two forthcoming novels The Hiding Place and The Taking of Annie Thorne They both arrived but imagine my disappointment and anger when I discovered that they are EXACTLY the same book This is in my opinion completely unacceptable After reading The Chalkman by Tudor last year which by the way was my favourite book of 2018 I wascstatic when I found out she was releasing another book this year so much so I d had the book on preorder for my kindle since last JulyCould this book be as good as The Chalkman well let me tell you now it s surpassed No Beast So Fierce even myxpectations Below is my overview of this book and I can tell you now it s not asy to review her books as you really do not want to give any of the plot awayThe book launches with a fantastic prologue which for me sets the scene for the rest of the book and ven at that point so arly on I knew I would be in for one hell of a roller coaster read The prologue is very dark gory.
