Scenes toward the novels end get pretty brutal and the outcome of events leave Alyda changed on many levelsIf I have to be one hundred percent honest though there was another character that was my out and out favourite I was totally caught p by the lusty antics of Lady Iris Bear Berwick It s great to discover a character that not only turns conventions on their head but also then throws them firmly out the window Bear is the antithesis of the genteel ladies that pop p in other fantasy novels She loves a drink the odd recreational drug or two dabbles in any romantic tryst she is offered and loves nothing better than a good fight Add into the mix a secret that is revealed about her around half way through and you can no doubt nderstand why I was immediately and tterly smitten I think this is the closest I have ever come to encountering a literary euivalent of Mrs CheesecakeDavies displays a natural talent when it comes to dialogue and this creates some memorable moments Even discussions between supporting characters raise a smileBah Skani thumped his stomach Tis pure muscle My Gardu says I have the body of a god A slightly chubby past his prime god maybeHaving the body of a slightly chubby god myself I couldn t help but be amusedWhen reading an author s first novel I think the thing I look for most is a sense of potential I m glad to report that The Red Knight delivers on its initial promise there is a confidence in the writing and I was drawn in from the first pageHow best to sum p this debut novel then I think I ll paraphrase liberally the tagline from The Princess Bride Heroes Villains Violence Magic Not just your basic average everyday ordinary run of the mill ho hum fantasy tale If you like you re fantasy with a cheeky dash of adult content then you could do far worse Recommended reading I look forward to This is one of those Epic Fantasy novels that show how far Epic Fantasy has come since the birth of its modern incarnation in 1977 There is of course elements that you will recognise from the Fantasy novels of the 1980s it wouldn t really be Epic Fantasy if there weren t but this is a novel that shows how Epic Fantasy has grown p in the last 36 years I was ickly drag This is a book that came out of nowhere basically I got interested as it has the same title with the huge Miles Cameron debut as it was pointed to me here on Goodreads so I checked the sample and it was compelling so much so that I had to read the novel nextIn describing this book I would say that the narrative pull is extremely high the main characters impressive in so far they are larger than life heroic and competent but brought down though of course not for long by schemers meddlers and authorial intent that made kings 5 stars Enjoyable book I stumbled across this book as an accident as I was looking for another book by the same title Lucky for me this book was pretty awesome lots of war porn with hints of magic I can t wait to read the next book Firstly this book should be mandatory reading for people who want to write gritty fantasy set in pseudo Middle Ages settings Why Because it manages to avoid every annoying clich associated with this kind of story while still having an exciting plot and a perfectly realistic world Secondly this book will serve as satisfying ammo against all those people who believe a fantasy story with a historically influenced society can t have interesting female characters No need for those annoying circular logic arguments just hand them a copy of The Red Knight and tell them to get back to youI loved this book Everything in it was familiar yet surprising making me smile with delight each time a particular trope was subverted The rebellious sex loving sidekick of the prince is an overweight woman and their friendship is both natural and completely believable The prince himself is spoilt and The Ascent of Man untrained but actually a really nice guy who rises to each challenge admirably and manages to remain entirelyn snotty throughout the whole story The mercenary is well genuinely just doing his job The The Grand Sophy unuestionable politics of monarchy areestioned and the worth of one family over the common person is an ncomfortable issue lurking at the edge of almost every scene not taking over the story but not letting itself be forgotten either And the captain of the most skilled order of knights in the kingdom the main character of the book yes is a woman and not a chainmail bikini in sight or those breastplates with the boob bumps on the front either you know the onesCaptain Alyda Stenna is a wonderful character She s brave resourceful and determined but also kind and compassionate She s a good leader and a good friend and it s clear that the men and women she commands respect her greatly She loves boasts jokes and gets afraid she wins the day and makes mistakes In other words she s never a stereotype but a ful. Ivil war loomsBut there are worse threats to Antia than mere human greedTwo people will stand against mortal and demonic enemies Alyda Stenna Captain of the Hammer of Antia returns from campaign to a hero’s welcome after prosecuting war abroad with brutal efficiencyGarian Tain the spymaster’s apprentic.

The Red Knight has a rather large cast but two or three principal characters and maybe just the one depending on how you count it Captain Alydia Stenna is in charge of the First Company of Antian Royal Guards Garian is an nofficial spy in the service of Lord Hyram Darius king of Antia O viziune a sentimentelor unofficial spymaster Alydia and the First were part of a recent victory against a neighboring country but they were forced to play that role when Darius brother Jerim never came to the field with his promised troops Prince Talin is a passable knight but also has a reputation as a bit of a layabout he s been assigned to Stenna s company to toughen them out While looking for proof that Jerim is conspiring against the crown with the Guthland thane Ulyan Redbeard Garian falls in with a tribe of shapeshifters and meets the love of his life Alydia and Talin go through a will they or won t they sort of thing where Alydia goes through a long phase of being convinced any relationship would be inappropriate The ending to the romance isn t a surprise but the book itself is a pleasant one with a well rounded cast full of people to root for and against and a lot of fun events and plot twistsBy a strange coincidence this was the second book called the Red Knight that I read in a month s time the first being Miles Cameron s Cameron s book isndeniably intricately plotted and detailed but I think it s Davies that Harveys Revised English Grammar ultimately windsp being enjoyable It s got a lighter tone without being completely a farce and honestly the main characters just feel a bit human and likable not better per se but likable Tonally and in terms of plot it s kind of a mix between Cameron s high fantasy war and something like the caper fantasy of Patrick Weekes Palace Job It s admittedly got its flaws it s an immersive type fantasy and it took me a few chapters to get my footing and the AlydiaTarin romance is of the sort where the outcome is a foregone conclusion and they jump from initial stage to deepest love really really Como agua para chocolate uickly But those are two minor complaints in the face of much bigger positives First it s worth noting that not only is Antia home to male and female knights it s also a sex positive book in a subgenre that tends towards fantasy worlds filled with misogynistic characters that means something to me My favorite example of this and the definite break out character of the book is Lady Iris Berwick aka Bear Tarin s best friend and a raunchy ass kicking knight who can shapeshift into a werebeast But Alydia herself is no slouch and reminds me a lot of the female protagonists from Tamora Pierce s fantasy novels that s a compliment In fact Alydia s whole company is a pretty cool set of characters though it s her suire Jaime that gets the most attention Multple kinds of attention Nicely done Jaime Add some treacherous knights nefarious sorcerers and multiple villains to the mix and it s a really compelling fantasy world Admittedly it s not breaking the mold forasi medieval fantasy but just by really committing to putting women on an eual standing it feels fresh I hope I made it clear that s far from the only thing the book has going for it but it s definitely a point in its favorMy only other complaint is that it s clearly written as just an initial foray into a fantasy world This is absolutely the kind of book where I d go out and immediately buy the second if it was available but so far there s no word of a seuel I ll just have to keep an eye out for Davies Fantastic Really enjoyed K T s Breed books and was excited to read this one I wasn t disappointed Subtly different from her other work at least that which I have read but maintains the same dark edginess and humour that I loveA triumph I only hope there will be a follow p Earlier this year I read the anthology Day of Demons published by Anachron Press and one of the highlights was The Deal by K T Davies It was a fun fantasy tale and it left me keen to read of the author s work The good news is that recently I got the chanceWhen I read fantasy I expect than my fair share of battles magic and if there is a bit of betrayal and the occasional traitor as well that s all good The Red Knight offers that and We get all the fantasy standards but the author also scatters the plot with some insightful social commentary regarding the politics of gender It s never shoe horned into the plot it feels natural and occurs in a very organic fashion In Antia your role is not defined by your gender Both men and women are trained as knights and treated eually on the battlefieldThere are some great characters in the novel and I m sure that Garian and Alyda are bound to be popular Both are put through the physical and emotional ringer It would never do to allow heroes and heroines an easy ride now would it Alyda has a particularly hard time but it gives Davies the opportunity to explore her hidden strengths The. A thousand years have passed since the Clan Lords and the Fey commanded dragons and raised mighty citadels The remnants of their ancient power lie dormant and a new conflict threatens the kingdom of AntiaKing Daris rules a peaceful and prosperous land but his conniving brother Jerim covets the throne and

Ly rounded character who comes to life in the story and who the reader really cares aboutThen there s Lady Berwick or Bear as her friends call her She takes the role of the funny rebellious side kick Han Solo style but there s a lot to her too She has a secret that she finds hard to deal with and at times she can be moody blunt and ngrateful just as she is ferociously brave and loyal Bear was definitely my favourite character of the bookAnd this is the real delight of the story the people are people The women are people and so are the men The foreigners are people The bad guys are people In what is actually a fairly straightforward story of our side vs their side a great amount of depth is derived not from complicated theologising about the nature of good and evil but from human hopes and fears and from real people s motives The women are fantastic characters not through great feats of strength or power but because they re people All kinds of women All kinds of people It makes sense for Alyda to hate the mercenaries during the siege but the reader can see another side just as the traitor the blacksmith and others are not faceless antagonists either The Red Knight shows how simple this can be and yet how effective it is and what compelling storytelling it makes The Red Knight is gritty fantasy and so there is ite a bit of blood and guts brutal battle realistic warfare one of the most exciting accounts of a siege I ve read and general gore spattering However at no point did it ever feel put in for the sake of violence and I thought it fit in very well with the story and atmosphere showing a hard realistic world that nevertheless still had plenty of good people and hope in it In other words realism doesn t have to mean grimdark and I think K T Davies really got the balance spot onThis was an exciting well paced story with a fantastic range of convincing characters and a tendency to twist clich d tropes into knots The world felt realistic but not too grim and I really enjoyed the touches of magic that were brought in The Red Knight is an excellent bookThis review also appears on my blogThank you to K T Davies for providing a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 4 StarsThis is a tough book for me to review as overall I had a difficult keeping my interest and focus on the story This book is very reminiscent of a George RR Martin novel in that it is a book that contains a large cast that is entwined in political strife The book plays out like a big drama where dialogue moves the story forward than action or place This book does a couple of things extremely well First for a premier novel by KT Davies this book does not suffer from Freshman bluesIt is well written structured and it ends well Secondly Davies has created an extremely rich cast that really carry this main stream fantasy It is very rare when the characters are too good for their story or for the world that they inhabit I loved so many of them from the Librarian to the Bear their are so many kick ass original and three dimensional characters to love and too hate Want a totally cool kick ass dark mage got it Want shape shifters that love to kill got that too how about kick ass heroines got that in spades with the Captain The good guys and the bad ones are all well constructed and they really carry this bookThat being said the world building is minimal and for a book one in a series it is not p to par The plot to me was razor thin and I really got nothing out of it The story as a whole is fairly ho hum Thank god Davies created that wonderful cast or I would not have finished itAll in all this one is just ok You might be better off to see the direction the series goes in with the next installment before you read this one A fantasy series written by woman with a main character which is also a womanAnd shouldn t it have a seuel already It s a high fantasy book I can call Multiple Mayhem (Gabby Duran understandable The plot flows you don t have to try very hard to feel involved or break your neck trying tonderstand the schemes and intrigues A page turner sort of book It might feel familiar knighthood magic war battle themes and some ideas might seem like you heard them before but it still managed to surprise me a couple of time It has irky dialogues funny moments cruel moments lovely moments some boring moments That s why I can t give i 5 I felt like some ideas could have had depth or should have been given developmentA fact to applause the main character is a female knight And I really loved that there was bunch of female character doing roles that mostly belong to men in fantasy Even if book was written in 2012 it still hold it s value nowadays And I don t know if that was it but following her Alyda Stenna perspective as a Captain was particularity interesting The story has a romance story line and the ending I really would have loved to see continued. E hunts for an assassin through the streets of the capital while the knights bask in the adoration of the crowdsThis is just the beginningBoth will fight overwhelming odds in a bid to save the kingdom War and betrayal will test them to their limits One will rise; one will fall; both will be changed forever.
